Really? Spring Cleaning is Good for Your Health?

Spring has long symbolized growth and renewal. With this sense of a fresh
start, many of us find ourselves engaging in activities to fulfill this seasonal urge: Spring cleaning.

While the act of scrubbing, dusting, and sorting aren’t necessarily fun ways to
spend your time, spring cleaning can be great for your mental, physical and emotional health.

Here’s why dedicating time to a seasonal deep clean is one of the healthiest things you can do right now:
1. Reduces stress and anxiety.  Clutter can contribute toward feeling overwhelmed.
Cleaning and organizing can restore a sense of order and control, leading to reduced
stress levels and anxiety.
2. Boosts mood and productivity.  Research shows that every hour of cleaning one does
per week can increase happiness by 53%. Less clutter can also make it easier to focus
on tasks and hobbies, thus improving motivation.
3. Provides a sense of accomplishment.  Cleaning gives us a sense of mastery and control
over our environment, offering a sense of satisfaction and a boost in self-esteem.
4. Encourages physical activity.  Cleaning tasks such as vacuuming, gardening, and
dusting can burn up to 150-300 calories per hour. In addition to burning calories,
cleaning strengthens muscles and increases flexibility, all while making your home sparkle!
5. Strengthens the immune system.  Living in a cluttered or dirty environment exposes us
to more viruses, bacteria, allergens, and pollutants. Reducing these risks in our living
spaces can give our immune system a better chance at functioning more efficiently.
6. Mindfulness practice.  By focusing on the sensation of cleaning, we can restore a sense
of calm and balance, clear mental clutter, and be grounded more fully in the present moment. Ahhh.
7. Family bonding.  Don’t do it alone! This is an opportunity to work as a family, which leads to bonding and a sense of belonging for kids.
Here’s to Your Well Being! (And a clutter-free home!)
