Too often, parents interact with kids and teens through giving direction and criticisms. Instead, make a point to have fun together.
As life gets busy, it’s easy for quality time with our children to revolve around chores, homework, and extracurricular activities. Trying a new hobby together can strengthen your relationship, encourage open communication, and create lasting memories.
Try this:
- Let your child help choose the activity. Whether it’s gardening, baking, painting, hiking, or learning to play pickleball, children are more engaged when they have a say.
- Schedule regular time together. Even 30 minutes once a week can become a meaningful family tradition.
- Focus on the process, not perfection. Making mistakes together teaches children that learning something new takes patience and practice.
- Keep it fun and low-pressure. The greatest benefit comes from spending quality time together, not mastering the hobby.
