Parents are constantly expressing concerns about their teens being addicted to smartphones and social media. My educational program “The Impact of Social Media on Teens” highlights the importance of parents teaching their children about responsible use, and limiting screen time to a maximum of 2 hours per day.
One of the motivations behind creating our new Circle Up Teen Groups was to create a place where teens can have non-screen, positive peer-to-peer interactions multiple days per week. We know that these interactions are paramount for the development of healthy social skills and a positive self-esteem.
When they arrive, teens put their phones in a basket by the door and the phones stay there for the entire group session. It is refreshing to see teenagers engaged and focused without the temptation or distraction of smartphones.
We are excited to continue our innovative programming as we draw upon our network of community leaders, role models, and skilled instructors to offer activities that keep teens excited about returning again and again.
