“Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent”. – Eleanor Roosevelt
Self-worth is our intrinsic belief in our value as a human being. How young adults feel about themselves will inevitably affect the choices they make. Young adults with a strong sense of self-worth are more likely to welcome new experiences, follow through on goals, and have healthy friendships. They will feel deserving of respect and love, not for what they do, but for who they are.
Tips to Develop Your Self-Worth:
- Identify your skills and talents. What are your likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses? Make a list.
- Spend time doing what you love. Watch yourself improve.
- Practice self compassion. Treat yourself with the same care and understanding you would a best friend.
- Evaluate the pros and cons of how you use social media. Frequent comparisons with others can erode self-worth. Open-minded discussions where you share opinions respectfully with others can foster identity development. Stop comparing, start connecting.
- Meditate or take walks in nature without your phone. Improve your mindfulness skills and your ability to calm your mind.
- Keep a journal. Writing can help develop a deeper understanding of core values, beliefs, and personality traits.
High levels of self-worth provides a firm foundation for young adults, leading to a satisfying, fulfilled life.
